AVB + VAC (sound + vision) present DISCO DESERT // (ALIEN TURF), an immersive aural/visual experience that transports viewers to a tragic kingdom of constant cravings. During a recent journey to West Texas, AVB birthed a new mythology of feminist fantasy and (wo)manifest destiny's children that will be displayed for one night only in a geodesic dome filled with reassembled and manipulated sights and sounds of AVB's scorched milk oasis.

Involving: a geodesic dome, five projectors, a surround soundscape, and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake.

"Why the hell couldn't you have thought of a more wholesome video to re-perform," my future, trying to get a real job self asks AVB Matti. "Sorry, future Matti, this video was downright double-dog-daring me and you know how that goes. Maybe you should run for office. A little perviness never stopped anyone there."

After the Bees decided to make a series of re-performances, Cheryl Donegan's video "Head" (1993) was the first video performance that rushed to mind. My good judgement swayed me away for a week, dismissing the idea as nothing more than a good laugh, but when crunch time came and I had to make a decision I could only think back to the first time I saw Donegan pulsing, spitting and sloshing about to loud pop-punk music. It was fresh and accessible, but also raw and violent. Please pass the cookies, time to buy some gallons of milk.

As a new performer, my main challenge was not just to learn the pacing and choreography of her milky mess, but rather try to find that slippery spot Donegan found between slap-stick comedy and over the top, raunchy sexiness and then, ultimately, make it my own.

After three takes, the first two consisting of unattractive faces, giggles and exclamations such as "fucking hell, this is way harder than the real deal," I came to realize how her minimal setup and costume (a chunky sports bra) helped keep the video from tipping into a boring smut short. I am thrilled that this is the first video I've EVER made. I can't wait to perform more. Maybe next time I'll wear a shirt.

as one of the models (and on behalf of the other bees featured in the beautiful sunset salutation group photo), i'd like to say that participating as a subject was an amazing, spiritually nurturing experience. for the brief time spent posing i felt a real connection to the history and enduring ideas of wimmin's land- sharing experiences and creating memories & futures for/with/by women. it was really special and empowering. thanks for including me (us), leah!!

Eve Sussman's The Rape of the Sabine Women

I just wanted to bring to everyone's attention this incredible event happening this evening.

Art House is hosting a screening of Eve Sussman's The Rape of the Sabine Women. This piece should be an epic, cinematic interpretation of the myth in which Roman men, desperate for mates descend on their neighboring Sabine villages to abduct their daughters and wives.

Sussman's mid-century modern interpretation should be nothing less than stunning, presented in HD and surround sound, and at Austin's Paramount Theater no less.

I had a chance to see 89 Seconds at Alcazar a couple years ago and it was pretty fantastic. Thanks to Art House for bringing this terrific event our way.

Another amazing Jill Pangallo event to report: THE COLLECTIONS. Given only one month to produce a 40 minute video from conception to completion, Jill Pangallo teamed up with Max Juren to create THE COLLECTIONS. It's People, talking about their Things! It's a video, it's a performance, it's a documentary, it's a fantastical vision, it's a contemplation on how possessions shape a sense of self & it's probably pretty funny. (Also at some point I believe I am in it dressed like a cat.)

The screening tomorrow at the United States Art Authority includes performances throughout: accordians, tap dancing, mom jeans, trannys... F-U-N, Y'ALL. Only $10 and you get a choice of a Collections dvd, a Max Juren dvd, or a Jill Pangallo "Let Me Entertain You" book to take home!

The creation of the Critical Fierceness grant expands upon this goal by offering a unique opportunity for queer artistic expression. Individuals or groups who wish to utilize the Critical Fierceness Grant for artistic purposes and who identify themselves or their work as queer are encouraged to apply. Critical Fierceness supports queer artists with financial assistance of up to $500. Chances Dances is proud to provide the Critical Fierceness Grant as an opportunity for personal exploration, community development and radical change through art.

Soap opera at UT recently involving an informal class instructor, a painting, the "dangerous" color yellow, a confused professor, and too much blogging. A situation so ridiculous even ol' John Kelso felt he had to weigh in.

The painting is currently in the 3rd floor gallery, and today there are people here from all over town looking for it and snapping pics with their iphones.

The work in this show is an attempt to reconnect and reconfigure a personal cultural and historical heritage. The result is the creation of a visual dialogue that can convey and create specific moments of rediscovery and reclamation. Rather than provide answers, the pieces in the show aim to further complicate the quest to create identities in contemporary American society.

Carlos Rosales-Silva is currently attending the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of Okay Mountain Gallery and has recently had shows at Co-Lab (Austin, TX) and Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin, TX) in their Young Latino Artists showcase.

CHANNELING: An Invocation of Spectral Bodies and Queer Spirits:

CHANNELING is an entryway into the spirit realm and the queer body politic: a program of experimental moving image work that summons the ghosts of the past and the specters of the future. If we imagine the technologies of film and video as occult mediums rather than technological ones, then perhaps we can make a kind of spiritual contact with the emotional and physical realities that are often invisible (ghostly) in everyday life. In this sense, both the camera and the ghost stories it captures can serve as powerful instruments in the act of queer worldmaking.

The artists in this program use their bodies and stories as conduits that channel the political and historical dramas that haunt the queer experience: the AIDS pandemic (Renwick, DiStefano), the body in transition (Montague), the idealized nuclear family (Pena, Robinson), and the cultural conventions that shape desire and desirability (EMR, Moulton).

CHANNELING is more than communing with the dead: it is a method of accessing the living. The stories we share together in the flickering light are not disembodied records of the past, but rather, bewitching presences that speak to us here, in this very darkened room. In using moving images to propose the phantom as a fundamentally queer body—a liminal manifestation, floating between two worlds—we open the possibility of entering into a spiritual dialogue from which queerness is often excluded. Like the process of filmmaking itself, CHANNELING is a reinterpretation of light and shadow; a new form of alchemy that can guide us through sorrow, pronounce our desires when we lack the language to do so, and conjure utopias that re-vision - and therefore reshape - the political present. Box 13 ArtSpace is pleased to announce the opening of Disturbance of Distance, a site-specific exhibition curated by Eleanor L. Williams, which brings together the work of Hana Hillerova, Leslie Mutchler, Jennifer Prichard, Emily Sloan, Gabriela Trzebinski, and Skote, a collaboration by Jill Pangallo and Alex White. Upon entering the exhibition visitors will be greeted with comedic “art-o-tainment” provided by Skote as a prelude to the exciting sculpture inside by Hillerova, Mutchler, Prichard, and Sloan, and a video installation by Trzebinski. The opening reception for the exhibition will be Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. The exhibition will be on view from January 17, 2009 through February 19, 2009 with a curator and artists talk to be held on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 7:00pm at Box 13 ArtSpace.

In Disturbance of Distance, Hana Hillerova offers what the artist describes as a utopian city of Buckminster Fuller design built by hippies that oscillates somewhere between chaos and order. Leslie Mutchler investigates the consumer desire to purchase an organized lifestyle focusing on furniture that functions as storage that unifies an accumulation of belongings into a minimal guise of solidarity.Ceramic artist Jennifer Prichard creates wall installations made of hundreds of handcrafted porcelain pieces that resemble beautiful new forms of lichen that propagate throughout a space. Emily Sloan proposes ideas regarding containment and nostalgia in her domestic-themed, life-sized snow globes. Gabriela Trzebinski presents a visceral and moving video installation examining the struggle against poaching in Africa. Finally, as guests arrive to and depart from the exhibition, Skote, a collaboration by Jill Pangallo and Alex White, will be staging a Live! From Pansuitland performance. Using the classic language of popular television formats — the talk show, the sitcom, and 70’s variety shows — Skote presents a comedic, art-o-tainment spin on celebrity-culture, object worship and reality TV, and at the same time exposes our own relationship to the phenomenon.

"AVB RE-Performs"
Austin Video Bee is a multimedia video collective based in Austin, Texas that seeks to promote experimental and innovative pieces and to be an integral part of the vital Austin arts community. Seven of the members of AVB have mined the history of performance art to find works that they felt were not "alive" or available to newer generations of artists and audiences. They each "re-performed" the work of an artist they admired and created video documentation of their performances. Stringing these documentation videos together becomes analogous to a game of "telephone," where our potential misunderstanding of what the performance originally was becomes a generative process, like covers of songs that retain the essential qualities of the original but become something new in the process.

The Austin Band Lotto is a long-term experimental project whose goal is to promote the formation of new sounds, songs, friends and bands. How? By gathering a group of friends, acquaintances and strangers and putting all of their names in a hat. In August of 2009, we formed nine random bands with people playing randomly assigned instruments. Each band came up with two songs in two months using the assigned themes. Out of this social and musical experiment came new friends, new bands, and a dynamic, fun, and a highly listenable compilation. You can get sneak peek AND your hands on it before it's official CD RELEASE at Emo's on Saturday the 17th. The jewel cased album features liner notes from Chris Lyons, the initiator of the project, and photography and artwork by Patrick Healy.

Sounds real fun! BYOB and bring pillows or chairs for the video screening if you want to sit down. There will also be tasty vegetarian "Arawraps" from Ararat available for $5-$6. Yum.

But the end of the year obviously also means looking back at what's happened, and this year two of our bees have gotten some shout-outs from the internet:

Despite labeling AMOA's "20 to Watch: New Art in Austin" their WORST#4, Glasstire declares Jill Pangallo the standout of the show:

Pangallo’s work is smart, funny, highly original and kinda creepy. Let’s hope for more finds like her in the next show.

And let's not forget that that piece, Note To Self, won best work of art award in the 2007-2008 Austin Critics Table Awards!

Also, the fabulously fantastic Andy Campbell, in the Austin Chronicle's Gay Place blog decrees that Ivan Lozano's FANTASY VISION MEDITATION (IN COLOR) was the #2 best gay thing in Austin this year:

Everything from the archival material (Fred Halsted pornos) to the soundtrack (a glacially paced disco anthem) not to mention the heaps of glitter piled up on mirrors like so much glam blow, was truly spectacular. It was an ache and an elegy. Gorgeous.

Campbell also gives a shoutout and a co-#2 spot to Bee fwend Ben Aqua's " incredible photos of his friends in their domestic interiors." Hooray for gay!

In conjunction with Kansas City’s Urban Culture Project and the Charlotte Street Foundation, Okay Mountain is pleased to present “Slow Cooked” – New Work from Kansas City, curated by Sterling Allen. The show is one half of an exchange project wherein the communities of Austin and Kansas City are brought a bit closer due to the sharing of each city’s artists and resources. The other half of this collaborative effort culminates in two exhibitions at Kansas City’s Paragraph Gallery; one featuring six Austin-based artists, curated by Kate Hackman and Grant Miller and one featuring a collaborative show by the partners and members of Okay Mountain gallery.

Though the formal and conceptual aspects of the five artists chosen for “Slow Cooked” are very different, an underlying detail to all the work is what seems to be a solid commitment to an idea and the patience necessary to carry that work into fruition. Though somewhat of a survey, this exhibition can also be seen as an
alternative to a current trend of artists who make work hastily or with little regard for craft. Artists include Marcus Cain, Michael Converse, Colin Leipelt, Kacy Maddux, and James Woodfill.

Hey, it's great to see grassroots projects like NOBODY'S GIRL are alive and well in the ol' ATX. Last night some of us caught a screening of the 30-minute film, brainchild of Michael Nason (AUS) and Brendan Harman (NYC), at the Blue Theater. Shorts by Max Juren, Elliot Hoestetler and Duncan Malashock got the crowd pumped beforehand.

The central theme of the movie appears to be immigration, but I am still unpacking the whole thing - Harman threw the word Dada around a couple times when discussing the movie, so maybe I'll never finish. Regardless, it's really inspiring to see an ambitious, considered, collaborative work like this come to fruition. Shout out to Johnny Cisneros in his short, but dead-on portrayal of "Director."

Also, if somehow you can get a hold of Elliot's Rapture (getting sucked up to heaven, not the band) themed short, do so. It is perfect in all ways, right down to the highly visible... well, I don't want to give it away.

The Texas Biennial is excited to announce, ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime’, a dance party fundraiser event at the Victory Grill on SATURDAY, JULY 26TH from 9 pm to 2 am. As it is summertime and we know Austin loves a good dance party, we will be entertaining crowds with Austin bands, {{{SUNSET}}}, VC Chldkrft, and a long DJ set from MEN-R-G. In addition, the Texas Biennial has paired with the Austin Video Bee and will have the pleasure of showcasing their video work, as well as videos from artist, Ben Aqua. As the evening unfolds, a dance-off will commence encouraging participants to showcase their best dance moves in hopes that our guest judge, The Immortal Pansy, will award their talents with a prize.
In the past, the Texas Biennial has been fueled by the passion of its organizers and a small budget to construct a viable and valid commentary on the contemporary arts scene in Texas. Now in it’s third edition, we are gearing up for exponential growth and need all the funding we can raise. The purpose of our ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime’’ fundraiser is to both raise awareness and resources for our upcoming 2009 Biennial. These funds will contribute to fulfilling our educational responsibility to the community by providing a diversity of complementary programming to our exhibitions. We have thoughtfully put together prize packages from generous in-kind donations from both local businesses, as well as arts organizations, that will be raffled off throughout the evening helping to meet our goal of creating the best Texas Biennial to date.

Ben Aqua is the founder of OK! FRESH, as well as a photographer and new media artist based in Austin, Texas. He earned a BFA in Design from UT Austin in 2005 and is a founding member of the Austin, Texas-based Totally Wreck art collective. Ben's work has been published in NYLON Magazine, ARKITIP, XLR8R, and Fecal Face. His work has been exhibited throughout the world, including Arthouse at the Jones Center (Austin, Texas), The Future Gallery (Berlin, Germany), and Trece Lunas (Monterrey, Mexico). He has performed at the SXSW Music Festival in 2005, 2007, and 2008, Fusebox Media Festival 2007, and the Austin Museum of Digital Art in 2006.

21st Century Machines: A Technodrama for Future Generations, Ivan Lozano (2007, video, 6:00)
Using the technologies of the past (pen and paper, analog video) as filtered by the technologies of the present (Internet video, p2p networks) to comment on the technologies of the future (post-biological humanity, hive minds), 21st Century Machines chronicles a cyborg love affair soured by technological incompatibility.

Recall, Torsten Z. Burns and Darrin Martin (1999, video, 15:00)
Through the context of training tapes from the mid 70's, Recall mines the possibility of existing alternative therapies that have gone untapped and lie dormant within the body. Mediated memory exercises of reflective therapy sessions and staged fire prevention methods used in camping are coupled with the artists' own physio-dynamic interactions. The result opens up an arena of slippage that questions the very nature of human intimacy and distance through the framework of the controlled experience and its surveillance as a record of memory.

“An episodic tour through the void of L.A., slips of pop culture, and Reinke's own astringent self-regard. Despite the blasts of dry wit and the hopeful embrace of gay porn, this is a lament. What grounds the tape like a bass line is Reinke's response to the death of his mother. What stops it cold is his tossed-off remark that this is ‘my last, my final video.'’” -Cameron Bailey

“Crafted from softly pixilated QuickTime, NetMeeting sessions, emotive vintage pop, airplane disaster footage, online porn, streaming Hollywood trailers, and the curious hypnotic qualities of taping off computer monitors, Bobby Abate's internet-sex-n-death video explores new anxieties made possible by technology, and the profoundly intimate places that tiny images and lonely piano chords burrow deep within the soul. If I Had A Hammer is like a tender and tumultuous visual virus, created to infect a world where humans live through movies, die through malfunctions and, in between, email their love.” - Ed Halter

FANTASY VISION MEDITATION (Megamix), Ivan Lozano (2007-8, video, 5:00)
Structured as a continuous mix of videos from a recent series investigating the parallel historical narratives of disco, gay liberation movements and AIDS. Lozano creates a phantasmagoric elegy for the fallen soldiers in the hidden cultural wars of the 70s and 80s by transforming two sources generally dismissed as vapid and disposable. The musical collaboration between disco singer Sylvester James (a victim of AIDS) and producer Patrick Cowley (who succumbed to AIDS less than three months after the disease was codified) and A Night At Halsted's by queer porn auteur Fred Halsted (who overdosed on sleeping pills after the death of his lover from AIDS) who helped in defining the culture of the era. Lozano imbues his materials with pathos by a careful and labor-intensive digital exegesis of the unconscious spiritual elements hidden in the originals.

Papillon D’Amour, Nicolas Provost (2003, video, 4:00)
By subjecting fragments from the Akira Kurosawa's film Rashomon to a mirror effect, Provost creates a hallucinatory scene of a woman's reverse chrysalis into an imploding butterfly. This physical audiovisual experience produces skewed reflections upon Love, its lyrical monstrosities, and a wounded act of disappearance.

BOX 13 ArtSpace is a nonprofit artist run innovative environment for the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art in Houston. BOX 13 artists create this environment through the offering of affordable workspaces for emerging and established artists, dedicating three interior spaces to the exhibtion of artistic explorations, a window gallery for installations and an outdoor performance exhibition space. BOX 13 promotes dialogue among artists and the art community on current trends affecting the arts.

The founding members of BOX 13 are Elaine Bradford, Woody Golden, Michael Henderson, Young-Min Kang, Kathy Kelley, Teresa O'Connor, Whitney Riley and Mat Wolff.

Big Medium (formerly Bolm Studios) is a grassroots, artist-run organization working towards becoming a nonprofit. For the past six years Big Medium has introduced and run programs such as the East Austin Studio Tour and the Texas Biennial. In addition to those programs, Big Medium operates an alternative gallery space, 20 artist studios, and has just recently introduced a project space that will be used for exhibitions, workshops and educational programs. Please join us at our first fundraising event: “Night Owl and Early Bird”. This two day event is both a call to artists and art supporters. Big Medium needs the financial and creative support from the community it has been serving and enriching since 2002.

Night Owl - A Call To Artists
Friday July 11th, 7:00 pm - 1:00 am

Artists, please join us for an evening of art making. Artists are encouraged to bring their preferred supplies and Big Medium will provide a selection of materials and surfaces. Create your own art and collaborate with others, all art created will be donations to Big Medium. Artists are welcome to bring finished pieces to donate to Big Medium’s auction as well. Food and drinks will be provided. Come back and join us in the morning for refreshments and the art auction.

Early Bird- Art Auction
Saturday July 12th, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Art lovers please join us for a morning of art. Place bids during the silent auction on artwork created the night before by local artists. Enjoy breakfast treats provided by Central Market, Coffee from Café Mundi, and Tito’s Bloody Mary’s. The silent auction begins at 10:00 am and promptly ends at 12:00 pm, followed by the live auction from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm with donated art and services from local businesses.

We will have a silent auction for original artworks and other amazing prizes from local businesses and the closets and garages of the Okay Mountain staff. There will also be door prizes and raffle tickets sold for additional items. Raffle prizes will range from the exciting to the very exciting (including AVB Failure DVDs) so don't miss out on an exciting chance to win the exciting prize of your dreams. In addition, we will have some good bands playing, food and cold beverages to consume, as well as many more goofy ways to spend five bucks.

This is the true story of what really happens when five artists get together every week to watch Reality TV. As the artists absorb the ritualistic dazzle of So You Think You Can Dance, the surreal ceremoniousness of The Bachelor, the manifest narcissism of The Swan and an array of other televised odes to our society’s chronic oversharing, what begins as an innocent time-waster rapidly turns to guilty obsession—complete with “countless nights of screaming and yelling at the television.” Reality Show is the culmination of these countless nights. Artists Anna Krachey, Jill Pangallo, Cecelia Phillips, Laura Turner and Jamie Wentz create collaborative as well as individual pieces meticulously parsing the looking-glass effect of a fame-obsessed medium, with deadpan results. Taking familiar memes from reality show rituals and applying them to painting, photography, video and collage, Reality Show explores the frequently bizarre side effects of living in a culture that can no longer discern the difference between reality and “reality.”

Kalup Linzy (born July 23, 1977) is an American video and performance artist currently living and working in Brooklyn. Born in Clermont, Florida, Linzy graduated from the MFA program at the University of South Florida in 2003. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture video art workshop, and in 2005 received a grant from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Recently, he was named a Guggenheim fellow for 2007-2008. Linzy's best known work is a series of video art pieces satirizing the tone and narrative approach of television soap opera.[citation needed] Linzy performs most of the characters himself, many of them in drag. Linzy also performs on stage using many of the same characters. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, and Artforum.

Notes on Net Art

Marcin Ramocki wrote an amazing list of talking points about Net Art 2.0, trying to delineate the thing or give it some structure or something. It's still a very uncharted practice in that the edges are completely blurred and there's still so many possibilities in the "medium." Critical writing about it is a double-edged sword in that it both helps those who haven't immersed themselves in it to understand the appeal and "catch up" with what's going on while helping artists solidify what they are trying to do either in relation or in opposition to a set of constraints. And that's the negative part of charting this territory, that in doing so, categories become fixed, the edges become more defined, and the crazy anything goes attitude it has held so far runs the risk of transforming into a strict model, or template for what Net Art is.
